Queenstown Veterinary Hospital is partnering with Dr. David Dycus from Nexus Veterinary Bone and Joint Center to offer orthopedic consults and surgeries. Dr. Dycus will be able to perform surgeries for cranial cruciate ligament tears, luxating patellas and fractures. Dr. Dycus will also offer orthopedic consults and perform arthroscopy, ligament reconstruction and arthrodesis. We are excited to offer these services and this will be a great convenience for clients that would have had to travel to the western shore previously.
Dr. David Dycus, a native of north Georgia received his Bachelor’s degree from LaGrange College where he graduated in the top of his class with a degree in biology and a minor in chemistry. Dr. Dycus attended Mississippi State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. During his time at MSU Dr. Dycus not only received multiple scholarships for outstanding academics but also was actively involved with research.
Upon graduation from Mississippi State University, Dr. Dycus completed a small animal rotating internship at Auburn University then headed back to MSU for a 3-year surgical residency. During his time as a surgical resident, Dr. Dycus completed his Master’s degree with research focused on developing a model to evaluate oxidative stress on the pathophysiology of osteoarthritis in the canine. He also completed a biomechanical study looking at different knotting techniques for stabilization of ruptured cranial cruciate ligaments. Dr. Dycus was able to participate in other research projects during his residency such as using a rabbit model to study the effects of hypertension on the heart. In 2015, Dr. Dycus earned his certification as a Certified Canine Rehabilitation Practitioner (CCRP) through the University of Tennessee. He has completed additional training following his residency by attending the Biometrix total hip course, the Kyon Proximal Abducting Ulnar Osteotomy (PAUL), the Kyon patellar groove replacement (PGR), and the CORA based leveling osteotomy (CBLO) courses.
Dr. Dycus enjoys all aspects of orthopedics, sports medicine, and rehabilitation. His areas of particular interest are in fracture traumatology, fracture biomechanics, osteoarthritis, total joint replacement, and stifle stabilization. He is trained in the use of minimally invasive procedures (arthroscopy and fluoroscopy) and attempts to utilize minimally invasive approaches where applicable. Dr. Dycus frequently sees patients with developmental orthopedic problems (elbow dysplasia, and osteochondritis dissecans) that are addressed with arthroscopy. Dr. Dycus is trained in multiple procedures for the treatment of patients with cranial cruciate ligament disease such as the tibial plateau leveling osteotomy (TPLO), and the CORA based leveling osteotomy (CBLO). He has received his stem cell certification and when deemed appropriate Dr. Dycus will employ the usage of regenerative medicine (PRP and various forms of stem cell therapy).
Dr. Dycus is frequently asked to lecture locally, nationally, and internationally. He has given over 200 continuing education lectures and taught over 75 laboratories. He is a frequent lecturer at the Fetch conferences (formally CVC), has lectured at the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) yearly conference, VMX, Western States, the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) yearly conference, Veterinary Orthopedic Society (VOS), American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care (IVECCS), International Association for Veterinary Rehabilitation and Physical Therapy (IAVRPT), as well as many different state association meetings. His research has been published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association (JAVMA), the American Journal of Veterinary Research (AJVR), the Journal of the American Animal Hospital Association (JAAHA), Veterinary Compendium for Orthopedics and Traumatology (VCOT), Veterinary Evidence, Veterinary Clinics of North America, Canadian Veterinary Journal (CVJ) and Frontiers to name a few. He has authored or co-authored 5 book chapters. Dr. Dycus is also the co-editor of the textbook: Complications in Cranial Cruciate Ligament Stabilization published by Wiley.
He was named by DVM360.com as one of the 10 veterinarians to watch in 2018. Dr. Dycus is a frequent contributor in both writing and interviews in updates in orthopedics to several veterinary websites and magazines. He has participated in multiple podcasts for organizations both domestically and internationally. Dr. Dycus has also been featured on Sirius XMs Doctor Radio’s segment on Pet Health and Orthopedics.
His passion for teaching has allowed Dr. Dycus to become a laboratory instructor for the CBLO, TPLO, extra-capsular stabilization, medial patella luxation, and fracture repair. He is on faculty for AO, which is an international group for veterinary and human orthopedics with sole purpose of education. Dr. Dycus is a consultant and key opinion leader for several different companies such as Nutramax Laboratories, Companion Regenerative Therapies, Aratana Therapeutics, Assisi Animal Health, Veterinary Orthopedic Implants (VOI), Exubrion Therapeutics (Synovetin) and American Regent (Adequan). He is also an orthopedic consultant for the Veterinary Information Network (VIN), which is the top online learning resource for veterinarians across the world. Along with being a scientific reviewer for multiple journals, he serves on the editorial review board and is the associate editor (orthopedics) for Veterinary Surgery, the official publication of the American and European Colleges of Veterinary Surgeons. He has previously held an appointment on the research committee for the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. Currently Dr. Dycus is on the Board of Trustees for the American College of Veterinary Surgeons, is a council member for the Association for Veterinary Orthopedic Research and Education (AVORE), and on the editorial advisory board for DVM360.
In 2018 Dr. Dycus helped cofound and currently co-directs the Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation Institute (VSMRI), which is an on-line app based educational tool for veterinary rehabilitation and sports medicine individuals around the world.
Dr. Dycus currently resides in Anne Arundel County with his wife Brooke, daughter Kennedy, and their two dogs, Maveryck and Cohen. Outside of working Dr. Dycus enjoys long distance running and cycling.
